Welcome to Roads and Transportation

The responsibilities of the Roads Department include the maintenance and upkeep of the existing public road network. The public road network consists of carriageways, margins, footpaths and kerbs. Other responsibilities include planning, design and construction of new roads and motorways, public lighting, traffic management measures incorporating provision for traffic safety and the operation of a school warden service.

Conscious of the vital importance of an adequate public road network to economic and social development, the Council's Roads policy is to bring the public road network to a reasonable standard through construction, realignment, timely and adequate maintenance/repair in accordance with a planned programme and to provide appropriate traffic management measures to ensure efficient and safe transportation for all road users.


The classification of our road network is as follows:

  1. National Roads (5)             55 km
  2. Regional Roads (22)         103 km
  3. Local Roads (2,400)          689 km

                                                 Total: 847 km

The Roads Finance Section deals with processing of invoices for payment through the Agresso system, preparation of monthly claims for the recoupment of grant monies from the National Roads Authority , Dublin Transport Office and the Department of Transport. Other tasks include the placing of advertisements for tenders, payment of wages, budgetary control, preparation of Estimates, Annual Financial Statement, preparation of annual contracts for plant hire and materials, minor contracts, hiring of plant for all sections of the Council, and the issuing of invoices for works carried out on a repayable basis for other departments of the Council and outside bodies. Adherence to strict controls in relation to the financial management and control of funds allocated in respect of construction schemes is essential.
